Session X: Translation Theory and the Practice of Specialist Translation (-> Handout)

Using the example of a specialist newspaper text, I will introduce some of the central concepts and approaches of translation theory. I will highlight two aspects of functional approaches to translation that are particularly important to the practice of specialist translation:

  1. The translation assigment (Übersetzungsauftrag)
  2. The role of source-text analysis and parallel text analysis

I will then take you through the various steps needed to prepare the translation of the text under discussion (i.e. the translation process).

Of equal importance to the practice of translation are research skills and aids to specialist translation. These will be discussed in the next session.

Assignment: Read the assigned text. Do the preliminary exercises (file1, file2), then translate the assigned text into English.
