Collocations and Phraseology

This session will be devoted to collocations and phraseology. We will look at the two major approaches to collocation, viz. the ‘semantically-oriented’ (Hausmann, Mel’cuk) and the ‘statistically-oriented’ approach (Sinclair, Kjellmer).

Assignment for Session IV: Read article 7 in your reader (Phraseology: The State of the Art). Then study the following concordances of ‘economic growth’ and ‘Wirtschaftswachstum’ with a view to ferreting out translation equivalents between English and German collocations as well as compounds.
