The acquisition
of vocabulary is the most arduous task facing the second language learner. If,
as seems almost certain, mastery of five thousand base words is a minimal
requirement to be able to understand non-specialist English texts, the number
of lexical units and collocations the learner needs to be able to produce such
texts is much higher. Seminar topics will include
· paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations between words,
· the relation between sense and syntax (lexico-grammar),
· the mental lexicon,
· vocabulary frequency and teaching approaches,
· learners' dictionaries, vocabulary books and dictionary use,
· vocabulary learning software,
· learning vocabulary through communicative tasks.
